from the Artist: Unisex T-Shirt. Declawing is the amputation of a cat’s toe bones. It is performed to remove the cat’s claws, which grow from deep within the bone. It is NOT a fancy manicure. Declawing is considered cruel in most of the world but is routinely performed on American and Canadian cats to prevent cats from scratching furniture. Many humane and effective alternatives exist to protect household furnishing from unwanted scratching. Declawed cats may have persistent pain and refuse to use the litter box because the litter hurts their damaged paws. They also may be more likely to bite because they no longer have their claws to protect themselves. Medical doctors do not recommend declawing cats as an effective means for protecting human health. Declawed cats are reported to lose their homes at a higher rate because of the effects of declawing. Laser surgery is not more humane. There is no good reason to declaw a cat!
